Things To Do Instead Of Being Sad That It’s Still Cold Outside

I don’t know about you, but winter is the most challenging season for me. January and February especially since the holidays are all over and “regular life” starts back up again, people go back to work and school and if you live up north like me, everything just seems like it falls and gets buried underneath a layer of snow.

But I’ve already felt down. I know what that’s like, I’ve tried being sad and doing nothing for a while, and…surprise! Nothing changed. I didn’t feel good for a month and a half so now I’m deciding to shake things up a bit and try to find other things to focus on besides how upset all the snow and cold makes me.

And that brings me to today’s post. Here are some nice things to do and focus on instead of thinking about your winter blues!


Try Hygge



Pronounced as “hue-gah” or “hoo-gah” (depending on your source), hygge is a Danish word that has no direct English translation, but is described as having a feeling of comfort whether it be in the home, or out enjoying the company and comfort of friends. Mostly though, it is seen quite literally as “the art of being cozy” and is a major reason why the Danes can maintain such happy and healthy lifestyles so far in the dark, cold north where winter is a very prominent part of their lives.

Hygge doesn’t have to be a lifestyle, but some of the tips and tricks used in “the art of being cozy” can be directly applied to anyone’s life. While I do plan on writing a full post on hygge in the future, you can easily grab a fluffy blanket, light some candles, and maybe bake (or grab from your fridge) some yummy treats for yourself – and you’re already practicing hygge!


Music Cures All


I’m a big believer in music having a huge impact on our emotions and the way we feel about life and things in general. The same applies for winter! While I sometimes find listening to tropical tunes a good way to escape from the winter storms outside, I have to admit that sometimes dreaming of the sun and clear ocean waters can just make everything worse.

For some classy winter vibes, maybe check out the Cafe Music BGM channel. This is one of my favorite channels to relax to, in fact, I’m listening to this live radio on the channel right now. There are dozens of mixes to listen to, and all are very calming and relaxing.

And of course, for my geeks out there, how about a listen to that Skyrim soundtrack? This video has included all the ambience soundtracks from the daytime in the game, and there’s even one for all the nighttime tracks as well.

Try A New Hot Chocolate Recipe

Pinterest is your go-to for this project. Seriously. Go to, slap “hot chocolate” in the search bar and you’ve got hot chocolate recipes galore. Or if hot chocolate somehow isn’t your thing (like, what’s wrong with you?), you could try the same thing with coffee recipes or any of your other favorite warm drinks.


Play Some Video Games



I’m going to have to tone my game-loving obsessive side down a bit and attempt to recommend just a few video games to play. I’m going to keep my thoughts on these games veeeerrryyy brief, because you best believe that the future of this blog has some very invested and in-depth game reviews/recommendations.

  1. Animal Crossing: New Leaf…it’s a game about running a happy town with animal villagers who all are adorable and quirky. This game is incredibly happy and relaxing, 10/10 would sell my soul for Marshall.
  2. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim…relaxing not your thing and you’d rather slay dragons, practice black magic, or run an underground theives guild all while saving the world in a frigid environment? Play Skyrim. And trust me when I say that the Theives Guild is my home away from home.
  3. The Legend of Zelda: Windwaker…let’s pretend for a second that you are not only an adorable chibi boy, but you’re also a hero sailing from island to island on a quest to save your sister. Open ocean? Check. Fun gameplay? Check (I mean, come on, it’s Nintendo). Quirky cartoon-y art style? Check and check.
  4. Pokemon Platinum…Bundle up, bucko, because we’re heading up north to catch Pokemon buried not only in the snow, but in nostalgia as well. I honestly don’t have a whole lot to say since it’s basically your standard Pokemon game, but it’s one of the few titles with a lot of snow and mountains. Actually scratch that. I do have more to say. Nintendo, WHERE IS OUR REMAKE?!?!

So I Did Some Research On Essential Oils

…and I thought I’d share!

I was in a Pinterest-y mood today and decided to check out what was going on in the “essential oils tag.” And let me tell you, there was a LOT going on…it was almost overwhelming. But I was up for the challenge (not to mention that when I get into researching a topic that interests me, I tend to go into full-on-obsession mode)! I thought that it would only be polite to share what I’d learned with all of you here and give you a (hopefully comprehensive) list of some essential oils and what they do. ❤

Please keep in mind that I am not a professional doctor, therapist, etc! These are just tips that I researched from Pinterest, other internet sources, or just my own experience. 🙂


Before we get into the list, let me give you a little insight into the little magic potions that are essential oils (but be sure not to drink them like a potion…these oils are for topical use only!). gives some great beginner’s advice. According to their page, “Essential oils are the highly concentrated version of the natural oils in plants.” They go on to talk about how essential oils are used in aromatherapy and are believed to have uplifting effects on the mind.

It’s important to note that while many essential oils smell lovely, they are different from perfume oils which are chemically engineered. Essential oils are all-natural.

I honestly haven’t had much personal experience with a wide variety of essential oils, but the ones that I have used, I’ve had really good experience with. And after all my research (and with yesterday being my most recent pay day) when I go out shopping in a little while I might have to pick up a few more oils for myself. 🙂

So without further ado, let’s get started!


Please Calm Down (Lavender)

I think probably the most common and popular essential oil that most people know about is lavender. Lavender is best known for its relaxation abilities and calming properties. It is a popular ingredient in bath bombs and Epsom salt blends, and it smells really nice! (As I’m writing this I actually have lavender in my essential oil diffuser at this very moment!) Apparently you can use lavender to help with muscle tension, irritated skin, and headaches. For me, I love the smell of lavender, and it’s one of the cheapest oils out there and is available in pretty much any drugstore, so I’d highly recommend picking some up for yourself!

Rise And Shine And Actually Stay Awake (Lemon)

Lemon oil is known for energizing and helping with focus. So while you might use lavender to relax at night, it’s probably a good idea to use your lemon oil in the morning to help wake you up and focus your mind for the day ahead. It’s also known to uplift one’s mood and promote positivity. I even read that because of its benefits, it’s sometimes known as the “detox oil” – pretty fitting for this blog! 🙂

…so remember how I mentioned I was going to go shopping later? Well I actually just went and ended up grabbing some lemon essential oil…I’ll for sure be trying this out tomorrow morning!

Your Skin Will Thank You (Tea Tree)

I have actually had plenty of experience with tea tree oil! It’s pretty much a go-to for skin irritations, and for someone with sensitive skin, I find myself reaching for it whenever I want an all-natural remedy. For me, I use it as an acne treatment, and it’s fairly effective. It’s powerful stuff though, and should only be used in small doses to avoid major drying. Due to its natural cleansing properties, it can apparently be made into a variety of natural cleaners.

Add Chocolate And You’ll Smell Like Starbucks (Peppermint)

I have to admit I’m not a huge fan of peppermint, simply because I don’t like the taste or scent (unless it’s toothpaste or another sort of breath freshener). However, I know that my dislike of peppermint isn’t a common trait of most people, so I thought I’d take one for the team and include it on this list, seeing as how it’s another pretty common oil.

Peppermint oil is best known for its cooling properties along with healing a variety of aches and pains like digestive discomfort, headaches, and fevers. It seems to be a popular ingredient in essential oil blends for healing.

The Actual HP Potion That Comes From Magic Rocks (Frankincense)

Similar to peppermint, frankincense is a pretty versatile oil that is used from healing skin conditions and scarring to helping with depression and anxiety. It seems very well-rounded in its healing properties so much so that it is known as a tonic and is effective as an antiseptic (disinfectant against germs). So cleansing! I actually have never used frankincense oil before, but now I think I’ll have to get it, partly because of all its amazing uses but also because please tell me I’m not the only one who didn’t know that frankincense came from those cool little rock clumps? Like yes please I would like magic healing oil from crystals of the earth.

I Need To Give This To The Drama Queens In My Life (Clary Sage)

Clary sage is, like lemon, an excellent mood booster and promotes positivity and is used to help against anxiety and depression. It apparently can also be used as a hormone balancer and can help with cramps, PMS, and even hot flashes? :O Ladies, this one is for sure one to add to your collection (mental note to add it to mine too)! It basically seems like a great mood booster all around, especially if it can help with PMS hoo boy.

Give This To Someone If They Smelly (Lemongrass)

Lemongrass is a natural deodorizer and can be used as a helpful air freshener. It’s also good for the skin, and can be used to scent shampoos, soaps, and lotions. Along with skin, it’s also great for hair health and can not only be used to keep hair shiny and fresh, but also to reduce hair loss. Along with basically every other essential oil, it’s a stress reducer and can help with aches and pains.


Do you feel like a witch now? Or a yogini? I feel like I should be potion brewing or meditating now or something, but seeing as it’s almost 1 a.m. (oops), I should probably just be sleeping. I’ll go ahead and refill my diffuser with lavender again and get to it!

A Few Nice Things to Watch If You’re Feeling Stressed

I’m a YouTube addict. I’m constantly playing videos, weather I’m watching hauls, listening to music, studying a tutorial or reviewing my own content. Because of my many years of YouTube content intake, I’ve stumbled upon some really pleasant and relaxing videos. The ones I’d like to share today are either videos or channels I stop by if I’m ever feeling stressed or down.a-bubbly-potion-pixilart

First up, I want to mention this video from the channel Maqaroon on YouTube.

Joanna, the channel’s creator, is a DIY and crafting genius, and her tutorials are very calming to watch.

Some of my favorites of hers are her needle felting videos. While I am not affected by ASMR, many people comment on these particular videos that the noise needle felting makes gives it that effect. I actually followed this specific tutorial to make these felt kitties myself from a kit I bought off of!


Joanna has made dozens of videos besides needling felting, some of which include putting together miniature dollhouses, slime making, paper clay crafting, how to make plushies out of fuzzy socks, handmade accessories, and more.

The beautiful art on this channel is just a plus to the lovely music. “i make music, record feelings and tell stories. i started as a pianist then experimented with computer stuff and now i mix both,” is how the creator describes what they do.

The best way I could describe this music is gentle lo-fi mixed in with recordings of pleasant noises ranging from ones that sound like gumballs being dispensed from a machine, to a drink being poured, or to birds chirping outside. For me, it gives off a feeling of a warm summer afternoon.

They actually just released an album titled “healing” (which I find pretty appropriately named) and contains most of my favorite songs from the channel. I have to say my favorite thing about Bunny’s channel is her own personality. While I love her video content, for me, it’s her quirky sense of style, hyper mannerisms and loud personality that make her so fun to watch. She’s plain entertaining, and when I need a distraction from life’s problems, I know that I can stop by her channel for a smile.

While the “Does This Thing Really Work?” series is my favorite over all, I actually really got into watching her squishy hauls and reviews for a while. She was actual a big part of why I got into squishies too! (Want to know more about “squishies” and how they help with de-stressing?
